The police said that at around 4.30 pm, Hasan called the girl into the office and physically assaulted her while others on the premises looked on. The attack followed a minor incident where the girl allegedly spilled rice and quarrelled with other students.

Hasan and other staff of the madrasa are also alleged to have regularly harassed and beat female students under the guise of discipline and forced them to perform chores like cooking and cleaning.

A police officer said the victim had been residing at the madrasa for the past eight months. Managed by a trust, the madrasa offers residential facilities for students.

Further investigations are underway, officials said.
