Karnataka slashes power tariffs for domestic and industrial connections

On the day it hiked milk prices by Rs 4 per litre, the Karnataka government announced a reduction in power tariffs for domestic, commercial and industrial users as well as educational institutions and hospitals by 10 paise per unit, along with an increase of Rs 25 in monthly fixed charges.

The new tariffs, effective from April 1, were announced on Thursday by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will implement a multi-year tariff system for the first time. It will dictate tariff revisions by various electricity supply companies for the next three years.

Following the revision, charges per unit will decrease from Rs 5.90 to Rs 5.80 per unit for the next two financial years. Subsequently, in 2027-28, the power tariff will see a further reduction of five paise per unit, bringing the unit cost of power down to Rs 5.75 per unit.

Energy charges will be reduced by Rs 1.6 per unit for low-tension industrial connections, 30 paise per unit for high-tension industrial connections and Rs 2.05 per unit for high-tension commercial connections.

The dip in unit cost is expected to decrease power bills by around Rs 50 per month, depending on household usage. Most houses in the state are covered under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which provides free power of up to 200 units.

Fixed charges, which cover infrastructure maintenance and other costs, will now increase from Rs 120 to Rs 145 per month.
