Karnataka govt doctor who demanded bribe for C-section section suspended

The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department Thursday suspended the gynaecologist with the Yelahanka Government General Hospital in Bengaluru for demanding bribe to perform a Caesarean section, officials said.
Health Commissioner Randeep D has said that action was taken against Dr Ramachandra K C for seeking a bribe of Rs 15,000 to perform a C-section on a 20-year-old Manjula.
Dr Ramachandra was taken into custody by the Lokayukta police on July 19. The police also helped the victim recover the money from the doctor after the incident on July 15.
According to the Lokayukta police, a ward boy accepted a bribe of Rs 10,000, on behalf of the gynaecologist. Initially, the doctor had sought a bribe of Rs 15,000, but after negotiation, the amount was reduced to Rs 11,000 and Manjula’s husband Lingappa finally paid Rs 10,000.
“Dr Ramachandra K C, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Yelahanka Government General Hospital, Bengaluru city district, demanded a bribe of Rs15,000 to perform a Caesarean section on a 20-year-old woman, Mrs. Manjula. As the couple is not financially well off, the family of Mrs Manjula agreed to pay Rs. 11,000. After the Caesarean section was completed and the baby girl was born, Mr. Lingappa, husband of Mrs Manjula paid Rs.10,000 to a contractual employee of the hospital with the name Wahid who works as a ward boy. The case against the said doctor is of serious nature and it has been decided to suspend him from service pending departmental inquiry with immediate effect,” the suspension order said.
