Karnataka Governor releases stamp to commemorate Raman Research Institute platinum jubilee

A new stamp was released at the Raman Research Institute by Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot on Tuesday, commemorating the platinum jubilee of the institution.

The stamp, which has a face value of Rs 5, was designed by artist Avijit Dutta and depicts a portrait of eminent physicist Sir CV Raman over the main building of the Institute.

On the occasion the Governor praised the Raman Research Institute (RRI) and paid his tributes to Sir CV Raman, referring to the various awards he had won throughout the world, such as the Nobel Prize and the Lenin Peace Prize.

He referred to the work of the institute in quantum physics and other cutting-edge fields as a “game changer”, and said that these efforts would aid in Indian development in the coming years.

A S Kiran Kumar, chairperson of the RRI Governing Council; former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Dr K Kasturirangan; Chief Postmaster General of Karnataka K Prakash; and director of the Raman Research Institute Professor Tarun Souradeep were present on the occasion.

Kiran Kumar said that India is on the threshold of taking science and technology to its people. “Many visionary scientists of yesteryears have shown how with limited resources, thoughtful processes, and creativity, one can make a huge difference to society. RRI is a shining beacon and has shown this in many ways,” he said.

The stamp release is the latest in a series of events and conferences commemorating RRI’s platinum jubilee. Previously, a stamp had been released to commemorate Sir CV Raman on his first death anniversary in 1971.
