Karnataka’s Congress government will Monday begin direct cash transfers in lieu of its rice guarantee scheme — a key poll promise that was derailed after the Union government stopped the sale of rice and wheat to state governments in June.

The rice scheme, Anna Bhagya 2.0, guaranteed five kg of free rice a month to every member of a BPL household, in addition to five kg from the Centre.

Karnataka has 1.28 crore ration cardholders who will be eligible for the cash transfer. The government will transfer Rs 34 per kg of rice, which amounts to Rs 170 per month per person in place of rice.
