Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna Thursday accused Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar of orchestrating a racket that honey-trapped legislators from both ruling and Opposition parties. His comments came minutes after Cooperation Minister K N Rajanna told the Assembly that 48 MLAs, cutting across party lines, were honey-trapped and sought an investigation into the same.

Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, Munirathna alleged that Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh were behind the honey-trapping incident of another BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, which led to his resignation as water resources minister in 2021, Janata Dal (Secular) MLA H D Revanna, his son and MLC Suraj Revanna and now minister Rajanna.

Along the same lines, a false rape case was registered against him too, Munirathna alleged, urging Home Minister G Parameshwara to investigate his case too.

“You (Shivakumar) are sending honey trap teams by holding meetings at 2 am. When you trapped Ramesh Jarkiholi, I had information about it. You tried it on me as soon as I resigned and joined the BJP (in 2019),” Munirathna said, adding that since he was alert about such a trap Shivakumar fixed him in a rape case.

The reason, he said, was that Shivakumar was angry that BJP candidate Dr C N Manjunath won the Lok Sabha polls against his brother Suresh. In the Rajarajeshwarinagar constituency – represented by Munirathna – the BJP gained a lead of more than one lakh, the MLA said.

“I request him not to do honey-traps anymore,” Munirathna said, alleging that Shivakumar had paid Rs 8 crore to a channel to defame him and Rs 11 crore to the same channel to defame Rajya Sabha MP and former PM H D Deve Gowda’s family.

Responding to a question, he said that a team of four to five people behind the honey-trapping incident against Jarkiholi was trapping other legislators.
