Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announces extension of Bengaluru Metro to Devanahalli, Tumkur in Budget speech
The extension of the Metro network to Tumkur will cover a distance of nearly 50 km while the extension to Devenahalli will cover a distance of 13 km

Karnataka Chief minister Siddaramaiah in his Budget speech on Friday announced that a feasibility report will be prepared to extend Bengaluru Metro rail from BIEC to Tumkur and Kempegowda International Airport to Devanahalli. The Chief Minister said that the works will be undertaken on a Public-Private Partnership model.
The extension of the Metro network to Tumkur will cover a distance of nearly 50 km while the extension to Devenahalli will cover a distance of 13 km.
Currently, the BIEC station is a part of the Green line extension from Nagasandra under the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) phase 2 works. Meanwhile, the Airport line is a part of the Blue line connecting the Central Silk Board and the Kempegowda International Airport under phase 2B.
In fact, the Congress government also has plans to extend the Metro network to Bidadi, Kanakapura, Hoskote among other suburbs to boost the connectivity to capital city Bengaluru. However, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has opposed the Metro extension plans beyond Bengaluru stating that “by doing so, it defeats the purpose of Metro”.
“Before fully connecting the city’s core areas, the Siddaramaiah government’s proposal to extend the Metro to Hoskote, Harohalli, Bidadi and Nelamangala is amusing. Metro rail is primarily to decongest core urban areas while outskirts are usually serviced by suburban rail,” Surya had earlier said.
Further, Siddaramaiah also announced integrated townships near the cities of Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, K G F, Vasanthanarasapura of Tumkur and Bellary. He also announced that Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Hoskote, Doddaballapura, Magadi and Bidadi towns in the vicinity of Bengaluru will be developed as Satellite Townships with road and rail connectivity.
The Chief Minister also said that by March 2025, an additional 44 km of Metro line will be added to the existing 74 km. He also stressed that Outer Ring Road-Airport road works under the Metro Rail project Phases 2 and 2A will be completed by June, 2026.
