Karnataka BJP leader and former minister K S Eshwarappa defended his controversial “Allah is deaf” remark on Monday, saying that he was just expressing what “a common man” felt about sounding the Islamic call to prayer through loudspeakers.

A day after he made the remark at the ruling party’s Vijaya Sankalpa Yatra in Mangaluru, he asked at a news conference in the city whether azaan (Islamic call to prayer) would “enter Allah’s ears” if two to four microphones were used for the purpose.

He said that azaan disturbed students during the exam season and patients. “This is my personal opinion and the opinion of the people. Muslim leaders should think about it and not impose (azaan) on people,” the BJP MLA said.

He said some Muslims were insulting Allah by making the prayer call using microphones. “Allah can hear. But they install not one, not two, but four microphones (for azaan). Will it enter Allah’s ears then?” the MLA said.

People should decide whether Allah has ears or not. “I won’t say it. People are deciding it already. It is true that I asked whether Allah was deaf. Someone has to express the feelings of a common man,” he said.

Eshwarappa said that whenever he visited a house, the residents complained that azaan was disturbing students. “People ask whether any law will be introduced to stop this practice,” he added.

“In the entire world, the only country protecting dharma is Bharat Mata. But if they (Muslims) have to scream loudly through the mic, then we have to say he (Allah) is deaf. There is no need (for azaan). So I think this issue should be addressed at the earliest,” he had said.
