The Bengaluru police said Tuesday they have analysed CCTV footage from as many as 300 cameras in the Suddaguntepalya area of the city to identify a suspect who molested a young woman on a street in the early hours of April 3.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said his comment that it was an “isolated incident” and said “such incidents take place once in a while in such a big city” like Bengaluru had been misinterpreted by the media.

The attack on the young woman by the unidentified person occurred while she was walking with a friend on a narrow lane in Suddaguntepalya, which is primarily a location for paying guest facilities that are used by hundreds of students and working women in Bengaluru.

“The Suddaguntepalya incident is under investigation. The police are trying to identify the suspect on the basis of CCTV footage. The feed from as many as 300 cameras has been examined so far. Several teams have been formed,” B Dayanand, Commissioner, Bengaluru police, said in a press briefing.

“Senior police officers are monitoring the night beat system and the nakabandi systems. The efficiency of these systems is being analysed with the use of software technologies,” he added.

The video of the incident went viral after CCTV footage was aired by news channels.

Parameshwara’s statement about the incident triggered a row, with the BJP demanding that Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra seek his resignation. “My statement was misunderstood. It is not right to twist a statement to denigrate me. I have taken many strict measures to protect women,” the Karnataka home minister said.

The Suddaguntepalya police registered a First Information Report (FIR) Sunday based on a complaint filed by a resident under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 74 (molestation), 75 (sexual harassment), and 78 (stalking).

The man is seen following two women in the CCTV footage recorded at 1.52 am on April 3. The accused, who appears to be in his twenties, is seen grabbing one of the two girls on the deserted lane before fleeing.
