The Bengaluru police Friday registered a First Information Report (FIR) after a woman alleged that gold and diamond ornaments had gone missing from her bank locker.

The woman, 54, who has held a savings account with the SBI Dollars Colony branch since December 2022, said she began using the locker facility on June 17, 2023. According to her complaint, she stored 145 gram of gold and diamond ornaments valued at approximately Rs 12 lakh in the locker.

She added that when she checked last on March 29, 2025, she discovered that all of her ornaments were missing. The woman claimed that when she approached Branch Manager Bharateesh and Deputy Manager Filjit John regarding the issue, they denied any knowledge of the same and advised her to file a police complaint.

The FIR filed on May 30 names two bank officials, among others. The police have invoked Section 305A (theft in a dwelling house, means of transportation, or place of worship) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the case.

A senior officer confirmed that an investigation was underway to determine how the contents of the locker went missing.

This is not the first time that such an incident has happened in Bengaluru. In 2020, the Shivaji Nagar police registered a case after gold ornaments went missing from the locker of a bank.

On Monday, SBI said in a statement that the gold ornaments in question were found in the same locker. “The police conducted a mahazar (panchnama) at the bank premises, in the presence of the complainant (Smt. Bindu C. D.), independent witnesses, and responsible bank officials. During this process, the complainant personally opened and accessed her locker. It was conclusively found, in the presence of all independent witnesses, that all items previously reportedly as missing were present and intact inside the locker. Certain articles had been inadvertently overlooked by the complainant, as they were stored deep within the locker,” SBI stated.

Bindu said that the gold valuables are presently in police custody.
