FIR against Karnataka BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde over mosque demolition remarks
In his speech, the Uttara Kannada MP called for the demolition of several mosques in Karnataka, along the lines of the Babri Masjid. The BJP had distanced itself from Anantkumar Hegde’s remarks.

The police in Karnataka’s Uttar Kannada district have filed a case against BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde, pertaining to promoting enmity between different religious groups, over his controversial remarks in the district’s Kumta region during a speech on January 13 in connection with the Ram Mandir consecration event.
The suo motu case against the MP was filed by a police sub-inspector attached to the Kumta police station. The complaint alleges that Hegde was recorded on video making provocative statements against other religious groups in a speech made to BJP workers and supporters on January 13.
In his speech, the ultra right-wing MP called for the demolition of several mosques in Karnataka, along the lines of Babri Masjid, by contending that they were built over Hindu temples. The BJP had distanced itself from Hegde’s remarks.
“Some people can take it as a threat also. We will definitely do it. This is a decision of the Hindu community, not of Anantkumar Hegde,” he said at the meeting in Kumta on Saturday. “…in every village of the state there are small religious places which were violated. Until they are demolished, the Hindu community will not sit idle….,” he said.
“Revenge, revenge, revenge. If we do not take revenge for 1,000 years, then the Hindu community can clearly say that this is not Hindu blood. We are not a community which will be in debt. We will clear the debt at any cost,” Hegde added.
The statements of the former Union minister have been quoted verbatim in the police complaint registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 153, 153 A and 505 for provocative statements and promoting enmity between different groups.
A five-time BJP MP, Anantkumar Hegde is a contender for a BJP Lok Sabha ticket from Uttara Kannada for the upcoming polls. He was not active in public life over the past couple of years due to an illness. Over the last couple of weeks, Hegde has started meeting people ahead of the Lok Sabha polls with the intent of securing candidature again.
