The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will emulate the model followed by state transport corporations to revise water tariffs, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Wednesday.

“Though we cannot completely cut losses, we are trying to control them. In the coming days, water tariffs will be revised along the model followed by the transport department,” said Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru development minister.

Water tariffs were revised for the first time in 11 years in April. Shivakumar said the tariff revision helped the BWSSB reduce its annual losses by Rs 500 crore.

While the population in Bengaluru is around 1.4 crore, the population in Anekal, on the outskirts of the city, has reached 50 lakh.

“We are supplying water to the 110 new villages included in the city limits. We hadn’t increased water tariffs for more than a decade. Owing to this, the BWSSB was incurring a loss of Rs 400-500 crore per year. There are records to show that in some instances the losses suffered touched Rs 1,000 crore,” he said.

Shivakumar was speaking at an event to celebrate the BWSSB’s accomplishment of setting a Guinness World Record for a water conservation measure in which around 5.33 lakh Bengaluru residents pledged to save water.

The Guinness World Records certificate was handed over to Shivakumar during the day.
