D K Suresh richest candidate in fray for April 26 Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka, all but 2 candidates of Congess, BJP, JD(S) crorepatis

According to their affidavits submitted to the Election Commission, only two of the 28 candidates from the Congress, the BJP, and the Janata Dal (Secular) in the fray for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Karnataka on April 26 are not crorepatis.

An analysis of the assets of candidates from these parties showed that Bangalore Rural sitting MP D K Suresh is the richest among them as he has declared assets worth Rs 593.04 crore in his nomination to contest from the seat again.

Another Congress candidate, Venkataramane Gowda aka Star Chandru, who is contesting against JD(S) state president and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy from Mandya constituency, comes second in the list of richest candidates. According to the affidavit, Gowda has total assets worth Rs 267.05 crore, five times the assets declared by H D Kumaraswamy (Rs 54.65 crore).

Captain Brijesh Chowta of the BJP, 42, is contesting from the Dakshina Kannada constituency and has declared assets worth Rs 70.56 lakh, making him the candidate with the lowest assets. The second from the bottom, in terms of assets, is S Balaraj, a BJP candidate from the Chamarajanagar constituency, who has declared movable and immovable assets worth Rs 72 lakh.

The richest BJP candidate is Dr C N Manjunath, son-in-law of JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda. The former director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has assets worth Rs 43.63 crore, and he is up against Suresh. The second richest BJP nominee is Bangalore Central candidate P C Mohan, with Rs 29.64 crore.

Some other candidates with deep pockets are Raksha Ramaiah, Congress candidate from Chikkaballapur, who has assets worth Rs 82.83 crore; Mansoor Ali Khan, Congress candidate from Bangalore Central (Rs 77.15 crore) and Prajwal Revanna, JD(S) candidate from Hassan (Rs 40.88 crore).

Of the total 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka, 14 each go to poll in the second phase on April 26 and in the third phase on May 7. According to the State Election Commission, 358 candidates filed nominations for the April 26 polls, and 74 of them were rejected.

Chikkaballapur has the highest number of contestants, 29. In the three constituencies of Bengaluru Urban district, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, and Bangalore South, there are 21, 24, and 22 candidates, respectively.

The fewest candidates are in the Dakshina Kannada constituency (9), followed by Udupi-Chikkamagaluru (10).
