A city civil and sessions court in Bengaluru Saturday granted bail to the wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law of techie Atul Subhash, who died by suicide in the IT capital last month after alleging harassment by his wife and in-laws.

Nikita Singhania, the wife of the deceased man; her mother Nisha Singhania; and her brother Anurag Singhania had moved a joint bail plea on December 19 before the sessions court. Nikita Singhania has also moved the Karnataka High Court to quash the abetment to suicide case against her and her family.

The high court earlier on December 31 directed the sessions court to decide on the bail plea by January 4. The state prosecutor had initially sought time till January 6 to file objections in the matter.

The three accused were arrested by the Bengaluru police in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh last month on the basis of a complaint filed by Atul Subhash’s brother at the Marathahalli police station in Bengaluru.

Nikita Singhania was arrested from Haryana’s Gurugram, and Nisha Singhania and Anurag Singhania were arrested from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh on December 15. The three were produced before a Bengaluru court and sent to judicial custody after the arrest.

They were accused of demanding Rs 3 crore to withdraw police cases filed against Atul Subhash and Rs 30 lakh for visitation rights to see his son.

The three accused argued before the sessions court that their arrest was illegal as no reasons were provided for the arrest by the police.

A native of Uttar Pradesh, Atul Subhash married Nikita Singhania, a software professional, in 2019 and had separated. Atul Subhash was facing nine cases including charges of murder, dowry harassment, and unnatural sex, among others.

In some of the cases, his parents were also named as accused. Atul Subhash had left behind a 24-page death note explaining his ordeal and also posted an 81-minute lengthy video before he died by suicide.

In the death note, Atul Subhash had also alleged that a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh was favouring his in-laws.

“My brother has been mentally and physically drained since the court battles began. He was constantly mocked and told to die if he couldn’t meet their demands,” Atul Subhash’s brother Bikas Kumar stated in his complaint.
