A case has been registered after a senior IPS officer’s wife filed a complaint against an income tax commissioner following a clash over seating during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru Saturday.

The Cubbon Park police registered the case under sections 75(1) (sexual harassment which includes physical contact involving unwelcome gestures), 79 (insulting a woman’s modesty), 351 (1) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to a police officer, the IPS officer’s daughter and son were watching the match in the Diamond box at the stadium, which is considered a VIP gallery, when the incident took place.

As the woman stepped away to use the washroom, the accused occupied her seat.

The woman’s brother reportedly asked him to vacate the seat, but the man ignored him.

Soon, an argument broke out and when the woman returned, she too raised the same demand, the officer said.

Reportedly, the I-T commissioner’s wife too joined the argument.

As the verbal altercation continued, other occupants of the Diamond box, including top government officials and their family members, reportedly ignored it.

The woman then informed the matter to her parents over the phone, and they rushed to the stadium.

The IPS officer’s wife filed the police complaint later.

The police said the accused, a senior income tax commissioner, had arrived at the stadium with his wife to watch the match.

“What could have been solved amicably has now become a matter of investigation just because of ego clash,” a police officer remarked.
