BMTC driver dies of heart attack while on duty, conductor’s quick action averts accident

A driver of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Kiran Kumar, 40, died due to heart attack while driving a bus on Wednesday.

Kumar, who was operating a bus on route 256 M/1 from Nelamangala to Dasanapura, was driving the vehicle when he suddenly collapsed.

Bus conductor Obalesh brought the vehicle to a safe halt, ensuring the safety of the passengers on board and preventing any potential accident. Following his quick action, Obalesh rushed Kumar to the V P Magnus Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The incident took place at 11 am on the final trip of the bust to the depot. The CCTV footage from the bus showed Kumar collapsing suddenly, eventually veering the bus towards left and brushing against another BMTC bus which was stationary.

According to the BMTC, only around 10 passengers were inside the bus and no injuries were reported either inside the bus or on the road.

BMTC officials told The Indian Express that Kumar was hale and hearty with no major health issues. In fact, the conductor and his other colleagues found him fit and normal even during the day. Kumar is a native of Hassan and is survived by his wife and a 5-year-old daughter.

As per guidelines, a representative from the labour section and the traffic inspector of the respective zone will transport the mortal remains to Hassan. The BMTC will also financially aid in completing some of the rituals as part of the final rites. Meanwhile, Kumar will be entitled to full service gratuity, provident fund and a death cum retirement benefit fund of Rs 10 lakh, an official of the BMTC said.
