Bengaluru traffic police urges IT employees to work from home in view of expected traffic congestion ahead of long weekend
The long weekend comes in view of multiple festivals and occasions including Independence Day (August 15, Thursday), Varamahalakshmi (August 16, Friday), followed by Saturday and a Sunday and then ending with Raksha Bandhan on August 19 (Monday).

The Bengaluru traffic police on Tuesday issued an advisory to Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) to implement work from home (WFH) for their employees in view of heavy traffic congestion that is expected on August 14, ahead of the long weekend coupled with predicted heavy rainfall.
Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Bengaluru city MN Anucheth in the advisory said, “This is to bring to your attention that heavy traffic congestion is expected on 14th August 2024 due to upcoming long weekend coupled with the predicted heavy rainfall. To minimize disruptions and avoid undue delays, it is requested to bring to the notice of the member companies to consider allowing work from home (WFH) for their employees on 14.08.2024.”
He further said, “This measure will not only reduce the number of vehicles on the road but also ensure a smoother commute for all those who need to travel. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter and thank you for your understanding and support in managing traffic in Bengaluru.”
The long weekend comes in view of multiple festivals and occasions including Independence Day (August 15, Thursday), Varamahalakshmi (August 16, Friday), followed by Saturday and a Sunday and then ending with Raksha Bandhan on August 19 (Monday).
The advisory comes after the Bengaluru traffic police was caught off guard due to an unprecedented surge in traffic congestion on September 27, last year, that led to a major gridlock on Outer Ring Road towards KR Puram. Lakhs of commuters were stranded for hours together in the traffic gridlock along the different sections of Outer Ring Road, including Sarjapur Road, Marathahalli, KR Puram and the surrounding areas. This was an outcome of several IT employees exiting their offices at the same time plus commuters bound towards KR Puram to exit the city, ahead of a long weekend and the Trevor Noah show which was conducted at a convention center on ORR.
During this time the traffic was 2X than what is usually witnessed on a normal day, leading to a major gridlock. As a result, the traffic police had then suggested ORRCA to implement staggered exit timings for employees to ensure that it doesn’t lead to traffic congestion along ORR, especially on Wednesdays.
The traffic congestion on ORR is usually also compounded by the ongoing metro works starting from Silk Board Junction to KR Puram and further towards Airport Road, which has resulted in narrower roads.
