2 techies die after BBMP garbage truck hits them in central Bengaluru
Both the deceased worked at the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as software engineers

Two software professionals riding a Harley-Davidson bike lost their lives after being hit by a BBMP garbage truck in Bengaluru on Sunday night.
The deceased have been identified as Prashanth, 25, a resident of Banaswadi, and Bayyanagiri Shilpa, 27, a native of Andhra Pradesh. Shilpa was staying as a paying guest in Whitefield. Both the deceased worked at the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as software engineers.
The accident took place when the victims were heading to K R Circle from Majestic. A speeding BBMP garbage truck hit the two-wheeler from behind and both the victims died on the spot. The Ulsoorgate police said they were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
The BBMP garbage vehicle driver fled after the accident and was later arrested. The accused driver has been identified as Shivashankar. “We suspect he was under the influence of alcohol and Shivashankar has been subjected to medical tests,” said a police officer.
Meanwhile, Home Minister G Parameshwara said the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will provide financial assistance to the kin of the victims.
Notably, the citizens during police-public meetings have raised the issue of BBMP garbage trucks being driven recklessly in the city. In April 2023, Jayalinga, a resident of Yelachenhalli, was killed after a BBMP garbage truck hit him near Jayanagar metro station.
In May 2022, Devanna, a resident of Kothanur, who worked as a food delivery agent, was killed after a speeding BBMP garbage truck ran over him.
The civic body, thereafter, removed BBMP identification from the trucks as these vehicles were frequently involved in accidents. The BBMP administration decided to install speed regulators on garbage trucks, restricting the speed to 35km/hr. However, a BBMP official said the measures have not been effectively implemented.
