Second airport for Bengaluru: AAI team inspects two sites off Kanakapura Road
The Airports Authority of India team is scheduled to inspect the third shortlisted site on Wednesday.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) inspected two potential sites for Bengaluru’s proposed second airport on Tuesday. The visits to the two locations off Kanakapura Road came as part of an ongoing evaluation of three shortlisted sites.
AAI officials later met Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil to discuss the project’s progress. During the meeting, a detailed presentation underscored the necessity of a second airport, citing Bengaluru’s increasing industrial demands and the strain on civilian air traffic at Kempegowda International Airport. Minister Patil assured that the state government would maintain full transparency throughout the site selection process.
The AAI team, which included General Manager Vikram Singam, Joint General Manager K Srinivas Rao, Assistant General Manager Manuj Bharadwaj, and Senior Managers Sach Duranand, Santosh Kumar Bharathi, and Amaan Chhipa from the headquarters, is scheduled to inspect the third site, off Nelamangala-Kunigal Road, on Wednesday.
Patil said the final decision on the airport’s location would be guided by Bengaluru’s specific requirements and based on the AAI’s forthcoming report and recommendations.
Two of the shortlisted locations are near Chudahalli and Somanahall—both in Bengaluru South taluk in Bengaluru Urban district—and the third is near Magadi-Nelamangala in Ramanagara district.
The Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation, the nodal agency for the project, has paid Rs 1.21 crore to the AAI for the feasibility study, which will take multiple technical and environmental factors into account.
The state government has prepared extensive documentation to assist the AAI team, including revenue maps of the shortlisted sites, 10 years’ worth of meteorological data, detailed geographic assessments, images of the terrain, Survey of India maps, and operational feasibility reports covering both visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR).
