Bengaluru police to use vehicle count from tech parks to decongest Outer Ring Road traffic
Companies are advised to start work at 8 am and plan their staff exit in a phased manner between 2 pm and 6 pm.

To manage traffic effectively, the Bengaluru police will now seek a daily count of vehicles entering the tech parks on the Outer Ring Road stretch from the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA). The move comes after long hours of traffic congestion resulted in nearly 3.5 lakh vehicles hitting the stretch on Wednesday.
The traffic police department aims to plan a staggered exit for those working in the tech parks on the basis of the number of vehicles entering the parks on a given day. The department is also suggesting the vehicle users start and exit early in order to manage traffic smoothly along the ORR stretch.
On Wednesday, the ORR witnessed 100 per cent capacity (close to 60,000 vehicles) in tech parks primarily because of the long weekend ahead. Usually, the tech parks record only 60 per cent capacity, with around 25,000-30,000 vehicles during the peak hours, between 6 pm and 8 pm.
M N Anucheth, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said, “We don’t have any vehicle count data based on which we can manage the Outer Ring Road traffic… We want the ORRCA to send the data by 12 pm every day. Our traffic personnel will analyse the data, based on which we will issue advisories every day on planning a phased exit for vehicles from the tech parks. This way we will know how many vehicles will hit the roads and accordingly manage traffic. If the capacity in tech parks is 50 per cent, we will not issue any advisory.”
He further said that companies should adopt a “start early and leave early” approach. “We want the employees to start working early and leave early. Ideally the companies can reschedule their work timings to 8 am and they plan their exit in a staggered manner between 2 pm and 6 pm.”
And as part of a short-term solution, the traffic department will direct the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to fix the potholes and remove waterlogging so that traffic could be improved by up to 30 per cent.
The department has also advised the ORRCA to implement shared transport options and shuttle services for tech parks that are likely to have more takers for the service.
