(PTI Photo)Bengaluru News Live Updates, August 18, 2024: The Congress in Karnataka will stage state-wide protests against the permission given by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for his alleged role in the MUDA alternative site ‘scam’ on Monday, news agency PTI reported. The Congress state president D K Shivakumar called upon the party leaders and workers to take out a kilometre-long march to the Taluk and district level offices and submit memoranda addressed to the President of India Droupadi Murmu against the Governor’s move.
A day earlier, the party and the state Cabinet backed the chief minister and turned down the opposition’s demand for his resignation. The CM, who went on an offensive against the Governor, dismissed calls of his resignation by Opposition parties and NDA allies – the BJP and the JD(S). “Why should I resign?” he said, responding to media queries. The Cabinet has “unanimously expressed solidarity” against the illegal decision of the Governor to prosecute. “The Cabinet totally condemns it as there is no backing (for the prosecution sanction) under law and under the Constitution,” the CM said.

What is the ‘MUDA’ scam case?: The Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment ‘scam’ is based on the complaints by three activists, T J Abraham, Pradeep S P and Snehamayi Krishna, against CM Siddaramaiah. They had alleged that Siddaramaiah misused his position to get alternative sites to his wife Parvathi in the posh localities of Mysuru by creating fake documents. The chief minister has refuted the allegation and vouched to fight it out legally.
