The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Bangalore Zonal Unit, said on Tuesday that it has successfully secured the deportation of a key accused involved in multiple drug trafficking cases from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The NCB has recorded the arrest of the accused individual, a resident of Kerala who was earlier detained by the law enforcement authorities in the UAE based on the Red Corner Notice (RCN) issued by Interpol.

The case pertains to the seizure of 6.624 grams of LSD, categorised as a commercial quantity, in a parcel from an individual on his arrival from Mexico at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on July 18, 2023. The contraband was being trafficked by concealing it within books and magazines. The police had arrested the carrier and two individuals who had arrived to collect the narcotic substance at the airport, while the key accused was at large, said an officer.

The NCB is yet to reveal the identity of the Kerala resident as investigations are underway. An officer said that the man has also been absconding in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) case registered at Coimbatore on January 24.

The deportation was facilitated through the close coordination with various Indian and international agencies, following necessary legal formalities, said the officer.

In February, the NCB officials arrested five people at Kempegowda International Airport and seized 20 kg of high-grade cannabis plants (hydroponic weed) from them. The accused were reportedly smuggling the narcotic substances from Thailand, officials said. During interrogation, all the suspects had said they were used as drug mules to transport the contraband from Thailand by individuals unknown to them.

According to NCB, these unknown people in India are believed to be a part of transnational drug trafficking syndicates. They allegedly sponsored leisure trips of the arrested persons to Thailand on the promise that while returning to India from Thailand they would have to carry a bag containing cannabis.
