Bengaluru Metro sets record with whopping 9.17 lakh ridership in a single day

Bengaluru Metro officials attribute this record-breaking ridership largely to the extended Independence Day holiday weekend.

In a remarkable feat, Bengaluru Metro broke its ridership record on Wednesday with a staggering 9.17 lakh passengers boarding its trains in a single day. This eclipsed the previous high of 8.26 lakh, recorded just eight days earlier, and surpassed the ridership of 8.25 lakh recorded on Independence Day in 2022.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) announced that on Wednesday, 9,17,365 people boarded the metro. The purple line accounted for the highest ridership, with 4.43 lakh passengers, followed by the green line, which saw 3.01 lakh riders. The Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Interchange Station at Majestic handled a significant portion of the traffic, with 1.72 lakh passengers passing through its gates.

Metro officials attributed this record-breaking ridership largely to the extended holiday weekend starting on August 15, with many rushing to railway stations and bus terminals to leave for their hometowns.

The previous ridership surge, recorded on August 6, was primarily driven by heavy rain across Bengaluru, which prompted passengers to opt for the metro instead of navigating the city’s congested and waterlogged roads. Meanwhile, the record of August 15, 2022, was largely influenced by the Independence Day flower show at Lalbagh and a large Congress rally. The rally attracted nearly a lakh participants, with many opting for the metro to avoid road traffic.

The increasing passenger volumes, particularly during peak hours, pose challenges to BMRCL. With only 57 train sets in operation across both lines, the system is nearing its capacity limits. Maheshwar Rao, MD, BMRCL, acknowledged these concerns and said passengers could expect some relief from overcrowding by May 2025. By then, the Titagarh Rail System is expected to deliver an additional 21 trains, which should significantly ease congestion.
