Bengaluru Metro Wednesday said three Metro cars for the third trainset of Namma Metro’s Yellow Line were dispatched from Titagarh Rail Systems’s factory in West Bengal’s Uttarpara Tuesday. The remaining three coaches for the third trainset are scheduled to be loaded and transported to Bengaluru by May 2 and are expected to arrive in the city between May 10 and May 15, according to BMRCL officials.

BMRCL attributed the partial shipment of the third train set to logistical challenges, specifically the non-availability of specialized transport trailers required to carry the oversized metro cars.

A BMRCL spokesperson told The Indian Express, “Due to the limited availability of trailers, only three cars could be dispatched initially. The remaining three will be loaded and transported by tomorrow (Friday) as we secure additional trailers.”

Necessary tests will follow the dispatch of the third trainset before it comes up for inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

The Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro is 9.15 km long and connects RV Road to Bommasandra via Electronic City. In January this year, Titagarh delivered the first ‘made-in India’ driverless trainsets for the Yellow Line. Before that, the first prototype trainset arrived in February 2024 from China.

BMRCL managing director Maheshwara Rao has written to the CMRS requesting that the Yellow Line be inspected before it can be opened up for commercial operations. According to BMRCL officials, if everything goes as planned, the line is expected to be operational by the end of May or the first week of June.

BMRCL is planning to operate the line with three trainsets at a frequency of 20-40 minutes, depending upon the ridership.

While the civil works for the Yellow Line are mostly complete, it has faced numerous challenges, including delayed delivery of trainsets, geopolitical issues, manufacturing challenges, and a subsequent delay in the launch.
