(File, Representational) Ahead of Eid-Al-Adah (Bakrid) festivities, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Monday issued a notification announcing the ban on sacrifices of animals at public places such as roads, hospitals, schools, colleges, parks and inside or outside the premises of places of worship.
As per the circular, only authorised abattoirs will be allowed to slaughter animals for consumption. “If any person or organisation was found violating the guidelines, they will be liable to be prosecuted under Karnataka State Animal Sacrifices Act 1959 Section 3 punishable up to six months imprisonment/penalty or both. Indian Penal Code section 429 punishable up to five years in prison,” BBMP stated.
Dr K P Ravikumar, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, BBMP, said that anybody found violating the law “will be punished as per sections of Indian Penal Code and Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act 2020.”
However, the BBMP had earlier as well banned the slaughter of animals in public places on the occasion of Bakrid. “Even before we have banned the slaughtering of animals on public roads. Cleanliness is a major concern. Moreover, transportation of cows, cattle, calf and bullock of all ages for slaughter is a punishable offence,” another BBMP official said, maintaining anonymity.

The restriction is in place on public roads and footpaths, inside or outside the premises of hospitals, nursing homes, schools, colleges, temples, mosques or other religious places of worship, parks or other public places.
