Unidentified assailants entered the residence of an elderly woman in north Bengaluru, tied up her hands and feet and murdered her before fleeing with two gold chains and a pair of bangles she was wearing, police said.

According to investigators, the body of Kamalamma, 82, was found on Saturday evening. She lived alone at the house in Mahalakshmipuram 2nd Stage. While the precise value of the stolen jewellery is yet to be determined, other valuable possessions in the house remained untouched, officers said.

Prima facie, it appeared that Kamalamma may have been killed between 4 pm and 7 pm on Saturday, they added. Around 7 pm, a neighbour went inside the house and saw her lifeless body on the bedroom floor. Her hands and legs were tied up and her mouth was covered with tape.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru North), Shiva Prakash Devaraju told reporters that the investigation had uncovered some leads and expressed confidence that the culprits would be nabbed soon. Surveillance footage from buildings nearby show the presence of two individuals at the victim’s residence, although there were no visible signs of forced entry, the police added.

After her husband Nagaraj Rao died in October 2022, Kamalamma chose to live alone. Although her son resided in Whitefield and her two married daughters lived in south Bengaluru, she remained emotionally attached to the house Nagaraj had built, officers said.
