Senior IPS officer B Dayananda has been appointed the new Bengaluru city police commissioner within days of the Congress party coming to power in Karnataka. He will replace C H Pratap Reddy.

The government order issued Tuesday stated, “B Dayananda, ADGP, Intelligence is transferred with immediate effect and posted until further orders as commissioner of police, Bengaluru city vice CH Pratap Reddy, IPS transferred.”

An officer of the 1994 batch, Dayananda also has experience working in Bengaluru – he was the joint commissioner of police (crime) and headed the city’s traffic department as well. Though Dayananda’s name had come up among those shortlisted for the city police commissioner post last year, the then BJP government finally appointed Reddy.

Reddy has been transferred as Director General of Police of the Internal Security Division (ISD). Besides, Special Commissioner (Traffic) M A Saleem has been transferred to the post of DGP Criminal Investigation Department (CID-special units and economic offences), and CID DGP K V Sharath Chandra has been posted as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP-Intelligence).

B Dayananda has worked as the superintendent of police in Bijapur, Belagavi, Chitradurga, Dakshina Kannada and Kolar districts. He is the recipient of the President’s medals for Meritorious Service (2011) and Distinguished Service (2022), and the United Nations Medal for World Peace Keeping Service in Kosovo (2003-04).

He has also been in charge of the transport department and the state Forensic Science Laboratory during which time an exclusive cyber forensic lab was set up.

In 2005, Dayananda started a police blog – probably the first of its kind in India – while he was superintendent of police (Dakshina Kannada) and bagged the E-Gov Award for Innovation, 2006 at an international conference in New Delhi. Under his guidance, Bengaluru city police started using various social media tools to connect better with people.
