After Amul kiosk row, Karnataka govt to push for Nandini outlets at Bengaluru Metro stations

The Karnataka government's move comes in the wake of the Opposition's allegation that it is not interested in promoting the state-run dairy brand despite the ruling Congress having used it to target BJP in election campaigning.

With Amul’s plan to open kiosks at the 10 metro stations in the state capital triggering a row, the government has instructed the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to seek permission from Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to set up outlets of Nandini, the state-run dairy brand, at its stations.

BMRCL, in its newsletter published on Monday, announced that it had signed a licence agreement with Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited, known as Amul, to set up kiosks. They are expected to come up at Pattandur Agrahara, Indiranagar, Benniganahalli, Baiyappanahalli, Trinity, Sir M Visvesvaraya station at Central College, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda station at Majestic, National College, Jayanagar, and Banashankari.

Following the announcement, Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka accused the state government of apathy towards the state-run brand. Although the Congress had used Nandini to target the BJP in election campaigning, “it is now determined to destroy the brand,” he said on Wednesday.

The BJP leader alleged that the government “did not even show interest in participating in the tender process”.

Reacting to the allegation, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said, “BMRCL had invited a global tender and Amul was the lone applicant. We have now instructed KMF to submit its application to BMRCL. KMF will open Nandini outlets in eight metro stations,” he said.

Noting that Amul had already opened its kiosks at two metro stations, the Bengaluru development minister said it was not appropriate to close them down. “We have informed the BMRCL to allow KMF to open Nandi outlets in the remaining eight metro stations,” he added
