After SC lifts ban, mining baron Janardhan Reddy returns to Ballari after 14 years

The Supreme Court had barred Reddy from entering Ballari after his arrest in 2011 over illegal export of iron ore, estimated to be worth more than Rs 12,000 crore. The court had recently lifted the ban.

Mining baron and BJP MLA Gali Janardhan Reddy Thursday entered his hometown of Ballari after 14 years, holding a roadshow to mark his return.

The Supreme Court had barred Reddy from entering Ballari after his arrest in 2011 over illegal export of iron ore, estimated to be worth more than Rs 12,000 crore. The court had recently lifted the ban.

Reddy, who had floated the Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha ahead of the Karnataka Assembly polls in 2023, merged his party with the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

He is an accused in nine CBI cases linked to illegal mining carried out in the iron-ore rich Ballari district and the surrounding areas, starting 2007-08.

“I will remain in Ballari until my last breath,” he told reporters at the state BJP office in Bengaluru Monday.

The roadshow was held by the BJP and Reddy’s supporters, after which the mining baron went to his palatial residence in the city.
