Bengaluru traffic police on Monday night seized a two-wheeler that had outstanding fines worth Rs 3.25 lakh in connection with a whopping 634 traffic rule violations recorded since February last year.

Officers were on the lookout for the TVS Scooty Pep+ bearing the registration number KA04 KF 9072 and it was finally tracked down by RT Nagar traffic police. Violations by the vehicle were recorded by the automatic Intelligent Traffic Management System camera, an officer said.

The vehicle owner is Ganganagar resident Mala Dinesh, wife of Dinesh, who works at a graveyard, according to officials. The scooter was bought in 2021 and it was first challaned on February 23, 2022. A total of 634 violations have since been recorded and all of them are for not wearing a helmet or for talking on the mobile phone while riding – the latest one on December 17 this year.

Over the months, the total fine accrued to Rs 3.25 lakh which is over four times the showroom price of the scooter. Unaware of the challans, Dinesh frequently passed through the RT Nagar area. On Tuesday, he went to the police station and said that he would not be able to pay the huge fine before requesting the police to release the vehicle.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North traffic) Sachin Ghorpade confirmed that the vehicle has been seized. “We have issued a notice to the owner of the vehicle and only after paying a fine will we release the vehicle,” he said.

A police officer said the number of violations was high as the intelligent cameras record each violation noted on a day separately. For instance, if a person has travelled through a junction multiple times a day, all violations will be recorded separately and fresh challans will be issued.

Meanwhile, the traffic police are once again planning a drive to reach out to traffic violators in a bid to collect pending fines. There are 48 traffic police stations in the city and a list of the top 100 violators under each station limit will be prepared. A police team will visit their house to collect the fine, officers said.
