Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh (WRMS),an affiliate of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NIFR),has demanded construction of cricket stadiums at Railway Institutes in Ahmedabad and Gandhidham.

A memorandum in this regard has been submitted to Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa.

WRMS Ahmedabad Divisional Secretary R A Bhatia said in the memorandum that the 100-year-old Railway Institute at Gandhidham and Kankaria in Ahmedabad had very good grounds and employees would play cricket over the weekends,“but there are no seating arrangements for spectators who gather in hundreds”.

Gandhidam, which has been developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ),is a major revenue earner for the Ahmedabad division,he said, adding, that there is no cricket turf or stadium at the place. “We will feel greatly privileged if a turf wicket and a stadium are provided at Gandhidham as well to promote sports,” the memorandum said.
