Workers held for protesting against celebrations

Ahmedabad police on Saturday detained nearly 500 workers,mostly women,associated with the Indian Link Workers’ Union of Ahmedabad near the Majoor Mahajan office at Lal Darwaza for protesting against the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations.

The police said the women workers had organised a protest against the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations alleging that the event made no sense when their cause was being neglected. They were reportedly on an indefinite strike for the last one month for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s failure to pay them salary hike and other allowances.

According to police,when Chief Minister Narendra Modi reached the Majoor Mahajan Chowk,the union workers held black flags and shouted slogans. The police detained the women protesters and made them sit in six to seven police vans outside the Police Stadium at Shahibaug.

Some of the detainees are identified as union leaders Akash Shah,Vinod Pilvaikar,Pallavi Solanki,Ramila Rawal,Bhanu Makwana. Later,the police freed the protesters.

The workers have threatened to continue their protests if their demands are not fulfilled.
