Work on state’s first expressway to begin this year

The construction for Gujarat’s first expressway connecting Ahmedabad to Special Investment Region (SIR) in Dholera will begin in the coming financial year of 2013-2014.

The expressway will be built in phases at a total estimated cost to Rs 2,700 crore,according to budgetary layout for the Road and Building Department that was presented by minister Anandiben Patel in the state Assembly on Monday.

The total budgetary allocation of Rs 4,400 crore for the department was passed in the House by a majority vote despite a cut motion moved by Congress.

Patel said her department had already invited tenders for the first 36-km stretch of the proposed expressway which will have a total length of 116 km.

For the first phase of 36-km stretch,the department has allocated Rs 1,070 crore,which is over 24 per cent of total budget for the department.

Patel said in the Assembly on Monday that the land acquisition process for the remaining stretch was in progress.

Besides the expressway,Rs 2072.43 crore has also been earmarked for completing work on six six-lane roads and two four-lane roads in the state.

Also,the second phase of construction at Mahatma Mandir will be taken up at cost of Rs 250 crore.
