Water released from Ukai dam,Tapi overflows

Following heavy inflow in the Ukai dam from upper catchment areas,authorities here started discharging water from the reservoir on Wednesday night.

Following heavy inflow in the Ukai dam from upper catchment areas,authorities here started discharging water from the reservoir on Wednesday night. Now,the Tapi river is almost overflowing as the water released from the dam reached the river on Thursday morning.

Apart from this,Surat city and most parts of south Gujarat received moderate rainfall throughout the day.

Many schools in Surat city declared holiday as several low-lying areas remained flooded. The flood-like situation in the area also affected the traffic as people left their homes to see the overflowing Tapi river.

Sources said in Ukai reservoir the inflow is 4.61 lakh cusecs of water and the outflow is 2.70 lakh cusecs. The water level in the dam reached 335.32 feet and the danger level in the dam is 345 feet,sourced added.

Addressing a press conference,newly appointed Surat District Collector Jayprakash Shivhare said,“At present we are monitoring the water level in the Ukai dam every hour. We have also alerted our disaster management team to tackle any situation. At present there is nothing to worry about and the discharge of water from Ukai dam is done to maintain its rule level. If dam receives more water from upper catchment areas from Madhya Pradesh,Maharashtra and other others areas,the dam authorities will increase the amount of discharge water.”
