A day after a protest erupted at MTB Arts College in Surat’s Athwagate area, with thousands of students agitating against the college authorities over the issuance of 8,681 offer letters, despite only 222 seats being available for the first-year undergraduate course, a show-cause notice was issued to the college authorities on Thursday.

The Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) authorities, after taking notice of the issue, demanded an explanation from the college. The MTP college (grant-in-aid) is affiliated to VNSGU. The protesting students on Wednesday shouted slogans against the college administration’s decision to admit 222 students to the BA course even as the fate of thousand others remained undecided.

Later on Wednesday evening, a group of ABVP members, the student wing of the BJP, also reached the college after learning about the issue and joined the protest. The ABVP members filed a complaint in connection with the issue to Principal Professor Rudresh Vyas. The ABVP also complained to VNSGU authorities and demanded strict action against the people responsible. Following the complaint, the VNSGU authorities on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to the MTB.

Surat ABVP president Ravi Mangrolia told The Indian Express, “After learning about the issue, we reached the college and talked to the students who had been left behind for admission. The MTB College has 222 seats for the BA course and they issued offer letters to 8,681 students. How did the college authorities issue so many offer letters against these seats? In our complaint to the VNSGU authorities, we have requested them to take strict action against people who made such a mistake.”

Mangrolia claimed, “During our conversation, principal Vyas, put the entire onus on the college clerk. The principal is saving his skin, as head of the organisation, he is equally responsible for such a mistake.”

VNSGU registrar R C Gadhvi said, “After receiving the complaint, we have checked and found that MTB College committed a grave mistake. We have issued them a show-cause notice to get details of the entire incident. We will definitely take steps based on their reply.”

Meanwhile, Vyas said, “It was the mistake of the college clerk who had issued 8,681 offer letters. We are also looking into the issue.”
