As a sportsperson,it was Razia Shaikh’s dream to represent India in the Commonwealth Games. Decades later, her dream will become a reality, albeit of a different kind. Shaikh has been selected as a technical official for the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi.

A resident of Dabifaliya in Bawamanpura,Vadodara,Shaikh was selected to the post following a series of formalities, including a written test in the National Capital.

She told The Indian Express: “Being part of the CWG is something every sportsperson would wish. When I was an active javelin thrower, the situation was very different. There were no cellphones,no Internet. The availability of information was a major problem. I would often think about it,but did not know how to get into it and there was no one to guide me as well. When I received an e-mail yesterday,I was thrilled because my dream actually turned into reality. I will be participating as an official, but that hasn’t dulled the excitement.”

She said prior to her selection for the Games, she had taken part in the All Asian Star Athletic Championships in New Delhi. “Since I have been active in track and field games,I did not find it difficult to clear the written test for CWG. I wish I could do something to promote athletics in Gujarat,” she added.
