A couple was killed on the spot and five others injured when five vehicles, including a goods trailer truck, a water tanker, an auto, a cargo car, and an SUV, collided in an accident on Saturday morning in Vadodara.
Primary police investigation has revealed that the car driven by the couple first collided with the water tanker and the trailer truck that was following the tanker, overturned, crushing an SUV and an auto rickshaw. Two passengers of the cargo car died on the spot while seven passengers of the SUV sustained minor injuries. Police said that the auto driver escaped unhurt as he had just stepped out of the auto that was parked on the roadside..
The deceased have been identified as Naresh Dodhiya (35) and his wife, Dharmishtha (30) — both residents of Jarod. Their bodies were taken to the local government hospital in Jarod while the injured were rushed first to private hospitals and then to Vadodara’s SSG hospital. Jarod police said that five hydraulic cranes were pressed into action at the Jarod crossroad, where the incident happened, to clear the impacted vehicles which had caused a three-kilometre-long traffic jam.
Vadodara Superintendent of Police Rohan Anand told The Indian Express that a probe had been initiated into the accident to ascertain which of the vehicles were involved in “rash and negligent driving”.
Officials said that the cargo car suffered the highest impact of the collision, while the passengers of the SUV survived with injuries due to the airbags that had opened in the front of the car.
Fire officers from Darjipura fire station in Vadodara and a team of NRDF arrived to help in the rescue operations and clear the road for traffic movement.
