At least seven people have been arrested in connection with a group clash between members of two communities over a traffic accident in Vadodara, said police on Tuesday.

Officials from the City police station said that the incident took place on Monday evening and subsequently two FIRs were lodged against a group of accused on the charges of rioting and causing hurt.

The incident took place when three two-wheelers collided in Nava Bazar. Even as one of the riders escaped from the spot, the two other riders got involved in a heated argument, followed by a physical fight, along with their supporters, leaving one person injured.

Both the riders lodged cross complaints against each other at the City police station, said the police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, G Division, M P Bhojani, said that the complaints of both parties had been taken after the police “arrived at the spot to prevent escalation” of the riot.

Ruling out any religious angle, the ACP said, “It was a spontaneous incident and not related to any religious festival. The two motorcycles were involved in a usual accident, after which both riders started abusing each other”.
