Following a series of protests from student unions over the delay in holding the convocation ceremony, Vadodara’s Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) Monday announced that the 73rd convocation of the institute would be held on December 29 with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar as the chief guest.

MSU Registrar Krishnakumar Chudasma said the University aimed to get “guests of big stature” as chief guests for the convocation ceremonies to “inspire” the students.

Fielding questions about the delay in the convocation and the protests, Chudasma said, “It is a matter of pride that the vice president will be the chief guest… His office has now confirmed the schedule and the convocation ceremony will be held on December 29… There are bureaucratic procedures (in inviting high-ranking guests), which take time. But it has been the attempt of the University that a dignitary who can inspire students agrees to be a chief guest. Since there are state and national protocols involved, all those who are supposed to be there at an event graced by the vice president will also be arriving for the convocation.”

Chudasma further said that while the formal degrees will be given out during the convocation, the University has already issued provisional degrees to allow students to pursue further courses.

He added that at the upcoming convocation, 9,000 of 13,500 students who will be awarded degrees have confirmed their physical presence. The University will also confer 325 gold medals to 195 students. He added, “If students cannot attend the convocation, the University has made special arrangements for students to get their degrees by updating their communication address with the University.”
