The Ukai dam has in 2025 generated 541.467 million units of hydro power, the highest in the last five years, according to an official.

Ukai Dam Deputy Executive Engineer, Mayank Rathod, said, “The water stock with the Ukai Dam is sufficient for the yearly requirements of irrigation, drinking purposes for SMC and Hazira industries. This year, 541.467 million units of power were generated through hydro power generation, which is the highest.”

An official at the Ukai dam said the start of the monsoon season marked the beginning of water inflow from upper catchment areas in the dam, which commenced on June 18, 2025. The water storage in the dam – as recorded on 18 June 18, 2025 – was 314.63 feet (3,111.44 MCM). The dam authorities had begun reading and generating hydro power units from September 18 onwards.

There are four hydroelectric power generation units – each with a capacity of 75 MW – which start operating while releasing water from the dam.

Sources say the water discharged from the dam reaches the Tapi River – passing through the centre of Surat city – and ultimately meets the seawater at Dumas.

On some days during the mid-monsoon season, hydro power generation was halted due to low water inflow. The hydro units were closed on November 9, 2025.

The total inflow of water into the Ukai dam from June 18 till date has been recorded at 13891.35 MCM (Million Cubic Metres), while the outflow until November 9 was 9725.95 MCM.

Ukai Dam officials stated that 541.467 million units of power was generated through the discharge of 9725.95 MCM.

According to figures obtained from Ukai dam authorities, the hydro power generated during the monsoon season in 2023 was 213.218 MU, followed by 391.580 MU in 2024 and 541.467 MU in 2025.

Sources say the daily water consumption by the Surat Municipal Corporation for the drinking purposes of Surat citizens is 1,500 MLD.
