Two children among four charred to death in collision between two cars in Rajkot

Bodies of the four deceased were burnt so badly that they were identified by DNA analysis, said police.

Two women and two children headed to Rajkot with their families in a Maruti Alto were charred to death after their car caught fire following a collision with a sedan that was heading out of the city towards Bhavnagar on State Highway 122, on Saturday evening.

The four deceased, who were among the eight people stuffed in the hatchback car, could not escape the vehicle after the crash near Sardana village on the outskirts of the city limits, said police.

The deceased were identified as Hemu Sarvaiya, 18, Nirupa Makwana, 35, and her daughter Hetvi Makwana, 3, and Meet Ashok Sakariya, 10.

Makwana’s 11-year-old son Hiren survived the blaze with some injuries as did Sarvariya’s husband Sahil, 31. Sakariya’s sister, 14-year-old Ekta, escaped the burning vehicle unscathed, while his mother Neeta escaped with minor burn injuries.

Speaking about the severity of the tragedy, Zone-2 DCP Jagdish Bangarwa, in-charge of Zone-1, said, “The incident took place on the two-lane state highway that runs between Rajkot and Bhavnagar. The bodies of the four deceased were incinerated so completely that we had to identify them based on DNA analysis.”

DCP Bangarwa further said that the driver of the Honda City car had abandoned the burning vehicle and had fled the spot. “Rajesh Vallabhbhai Sabhaad (22) has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections for culpable homicide not amounting to murder as well as under sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, at Aji Dam police station.”
