Two persons were detained from Madhya Pradesh for allegedly sending threat messages on behalf of a pro-Khalistan group asking people to not attend the India-Australia cricket match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, on March 8.

Ahmedabad police’s Cyber Crime Cell detained the two, identified as Rahul Kumar (31) and Narendra Kushwaha (30) from Satna, said JM Yadav, assistant commissioner of police (cyber crime).

According to another senior crime branch official, on March 8 night, a day before the test match began, several people, including media persons, government officials and politicians, received messages and calls with a pre-recorded message in the voice of Gurupatwant Singh Pannun, the founder of the banned group Sikh For Justice.

According to Crime branch officials, the message said pro-Khalistan people would storm the stadium to raise their flag and warned people against going to the stadium, along with levelling allegations against the ruling government.

The calls were traced to a fake telephone exchange in Madhya Pradesh, the official said, adding that the Twitter handles used to send the video message were newly created and were traced to Pakistan.

“The fake telephone exchange facility was set up in Rewa, where 11 SIM boxes, about 300 SIM cards, and about 5 routers were recovered,” said Yadav.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese were present at the stadium to watch the match on the first day of the test match on March 8.
According to officials of the Cyber Crime Cell, the detained persons will be formally arrested after getting concrete information.
