Thousands join funeral of ‘electrocuted’ boy

Mayur’s body was handed over to his family on Friday night after his father Balaji Thakor identified it.

There was chaos in Naroda area as traders shut their shops in the morning and gathered in large number showing anger against the police for their alleged negligence in the case.

After the top police officers JCP (Sector II) S G Bhati and zone DCP Neeraj Badgujar met the family members at Chamundanagar in Naroda,Mayur’s funeral procession was carried out in the afternoon with more than 1,500 people joining Mayur’s parents.

Around 400 traders of the Naroda Traders Association observed a complete bandh to oppose against the inaction in Mayur’s case. Mayur had gone missing on June 24. However,the Naroda police began investigations in his case only on June 26. Later,it was transferred to DCB on June 27.

Congress MP Jagdish Thakor,Mayur’s uncle said,“We don’t accept this electrocution theory at all. If a boy gets electrocuted and dies,how does a crowd of 500 and more doesn’t notice it? The boy was murdered inside the fun fair by the same accused.”

The DCB probe shows that Mayur had died inside the fair due to electrocution on June 24. The fun fair organizers wanted to hide his death from public anger and they decided to dispose off his body. The accused had taken his body on a motorbike and later in a hired car to finally dispose it off near Chitrasani outpost on Palanpur Highway.

The boy’s body could have been found only because the toll booth officials complained of stench and alerted Banaskantha police about a unclaimed body. The Ahmedabad police shut down the fun fair on Saturday and deployed bandobast in Naroda to avoid any untoward situations.
