TET, TAT candidates hold protest to demand recruitment of govt teachers, 150 detained in Gandhinagar
Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, who participated in the TET/TAT protest, was also among those detained by the police

Around 150 government job aspirants who have cleared Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and Teacher Aptitude Test (TAT) were on Tuesday detained by Gandhinagar police after they held a protest in the city to demand recruitment of government teachers.
Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, who participated in the protest, was also among those detained by the police.
The protest was held in front of Pathikashram in the state capital and as they gathered to protest, police swung into action and detained the protesters and took them to different locations in the city.
The protesters want the government to shun the Gyan Sahyak scheme which aims to fill vacancies in schools on contractual basis till the process of regular appointments is complete.
It is mandatory to clear TET to get recruited as a teacher for Classes 1 to 8 in government and grant-in-aid schools. Similarly, clearing the TAT is mandatory to get recruited as a teacher for Classes 9 to 12 in these schools.
Speaking with The Indian Express, Mevani said, “Unemployment is at its peak in the state. When there are vacancies and qualified members, why is the government not filling up the posts? The candidates protested today (Tuesday) and I participated in it as a mark of support. Their demands are reasonable. I am going to hold a big protest of TET/TAT candidates in Ahmedabad soon.”
Dilipsinh Rajput, one of the protesting candidates who was detained by the police, said, “As per government records, there are over 40,000 vacant posts and there are around 70,000 candidates who have cleared TET/TAT. Yet, the government is not conducting recruitment of regular teachers.”
Rajput claimed that around 1,000 candidates had come to Gandhinagar to take part in the protest.
Gandhinagar district Superintendent of Police Ravi Teja Vasamsetty said they detained around 150 candidates who protested without the mandatory police permission.
