Police arrested four people in Surat for allegedly impersonating ‘sadhus’ to ask people for money. The four were rounded up by local residents who handed them over to the police.

“They belong to the Madari community (working as snake charmers) and their work was not going well. They confessed to us that they wore saffron clothes to attract people and be given money,” police inspector B A Bhatt told The Indian Express.

The incident took place in the Adajan area in Surat city on Monday afternoon, when residents reportedly suspected them after one of them called another “Salman”. The residents then asked them to recite shlokas and asked further questions, after which they handed the four over to the police, officials said.

Police then arrested them under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita section 128 (security for good behaviour from suspected persons). On questioning and collecting their election identity cards, police found they were cousin brothers from Morbi who had come to Surat “a few days ago,” before letting them go.
