A probationary police sub-inspector was arrested on Thursday evening by Surat police for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a wanted bootlegger and helping him to escape. The arrested SI,J D Devda,was posted at the Umra police station for the last three months.
A couple of days ago,a police team had carried out a raid on a liquor den run by one Sushila at Harpativas at Piplod village in Umra and seized 19 litre of country-made liquor from the spot.
During investigations,police learnt that Sushila and her business partner Nanu Patel were involved in such illegal activities following which a case was lodged against them under Prohibition Act.
On June 9,Devda,along with his team,was on patrolling duty when they spotted Nanu riding a bike near the Bharat crossroads. Devda,who was in-charge of the patrolling squad,allegedly took Rs 50,000 from Nanu and allowed him to go.
Sources said the higher ups came to know about the incident following which an investigation was initiated against Devda.
Meanwhile,Nanu was also arrested on Thursday and reportedly admitted that he bribed Devda to escape,police officials said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police S K Dave said,We have taken statements of Devda and Nanu Patel. We have also confirmed the incident with the police constables who were present at the spot. We will take strict action against the probationary police sub-inspector. He has been booked under in corruption charges.
