A businessman in Surat attempted to end his life on Sunday after allegedly facing regular threats and harassment from loan sharks, officials said.

Police said the man runs a textile business. However, for the last few months, his business had not been doing well and he was unable to pay installments for a loan. The trader is currently admitted to a city hospital where his condition is said to be stable.

Police officers said the man’s sister-in-law first spotted him lying on the bed with blood flowing from his wrists. She immediately called the 108 Ambulance Service. However, since the man was overweight, making it hard for the ambulance staff to bring him down from the fourth-floor apartment, eight staff members of Amroli police were called in.

The officers further called up the Kosad fire department. Elaborating on how they managed to bring the man down to the ground floor, Kosad sub fire officer Kanti Bhagaria told The Indian Express, “We first got him seated on the bed and tied a saree and a towel through his underarms to the neck portion. Another cloth was wrapped around his waist area. Then, we made him lie on a thick bedsheet; while some people held the bedsheet, others lifted his shoulder and waist area. Since there was no lift in the apartment and the staircase was narrow, we faced great difficulty in bringing him down to the ground floor. It took us 45 minutes.”

The man’s niece said, “Recovery agents used to come to our house every three days, harass and threaten us…We want the police to intervene and convince the money lenders to give us some time.”
