Three days after four workers had died following an industrial accident at AM/NS Surat, the company authorities have announced financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh and a job to one family member of each of the deceased persons. Surat district collector, meanwhile, has ordered City Prant officials to carry out probe into the incident.

Four workers were killed in a fire at ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India’s (AM/NS India) plant in Hazira industrial area in Surat on December 31. Since the bodies were charred beyond recognition, police carried out DNA tests to ascertain their identity; on Thursday, the test results turned up positive.

Sources said that the family members refused to accept the bodies as the company had not announced any financial assistance by then. Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Singh Gurjar then intervened in the matter and assured the kin that all possible help will be provided.
As the company announced compensation, the kin of the deceased agreed to take their bodies for last rites, said sources.

Surat district collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi has ordered the City Prant officer to carry out a probe into the incident and submit a report in the next two days.
