Dr Rutvik Darjee, the accused, was suspended last year too for harassing and assaulting a junior medical student.
Days after he allegedly assaulted a woman at the boys hostel, a postgraduate student at the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) medical college was suspended on Wednesday. A department inquiry has been initiated by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) into the incident, said officials.
Dr Rutvik Darjee, the accused, was suspended last year too for harassing and assaulting a junior medical student.
Dr Dipak Howale, Dean, SMIMR, on Monday had constituted a team of five professors of different departments to probe into the incident. The committee then prepared a primary report and submitted it to the dean.
Darjee allegedly convinced a woman to come to the SMIMR boys’ hostel on Sunday night after meeting her at a deserted place. He had found her contacts online. At a room in the boys’ hostel, she was allegedly assaulted by the doctor. She managed to escape and sought help from security guards, police were told. At the police station, however, she refused to file a complaint.
Speaking with The Indian Express, Dr Howale said, “In the committee report of five professors, the accused was found guilty. The committee members took statements of the people who came in contact with the woman like security guards of SMIMER hospital and statements of Dr. Rutvik as well. The CCTV footage of the SMIMER campus in which the woman is clearly seen running out of the boys hostel was also taken. We have forwarded the committee probe report to SMC Commissioner Shalini Agrawal to take further decision and have requested to take severe punishment against the accused.”
