The Ahmedabad rural police on Wednesday arrested six people for allegedly duping a sawmill owner to the tune of Rs 1 lakh by posing as forest department officers. The six have been booked on charges of forgery.
The police said the accused Hardik Padiya,Bharat Thakur,Manoj Thakur,Jayesh Primali,Anand Christian and Kannu Desai had on June 2 this year,extorted Rs 1 lakh from the owners of Bharat Sawmill near Vishala Circle.
According to the details of the case,the accused had first intercepted a wood-laden truck near Sabar Hotel on the Sanad-Sarkhej highway. They started interrogating the driver by posing as forest department officials, said Sanand Inspector R R Limbad.
The jittery truck driver took the six to his employer,the police said.
Manoj posed as a Sub-District Forest Officer and demanded Rs 3 lakh from the sawmill owners. The amount was later negotiated to Rs 1 lakh, Limbad added.
The police said Hardik was the first to be nabbed.
The other five were arrested following leads that Hardik gave during his interrogation.
The police are probing into the possibility of the accused having been involved in some other similar cheating cases.
